PIERRE ELLIOT TRUDEAU

by Jessica

Being consistent and dependable is an important quality for a

leader to have. If they are not always where they are supposed to be you will never know where or when to be at the same place or time as your group leader.

Being humble and patient is an important quality for a leader to have. If the leader was impatient the followers would get frustrated and they may not follow. If you are a leader and your group just can’t get whatever you’re teaching them, patience will help them to reach their goal.

Being able to receive and give constructive criticism is important for a leader to be able to do.  Otherwise if you give your leader any type of criticism they will take it seriously. This would be a sign of a weak leader.

Being a disciplined student of study and work is also important. If you are not disciplined you will not be able to discipline your followers, if they need it. Also if you aren't‚t a student devoted to their work what kind of example is it towards your followers?

Being a thinker is a good quality to have. Your imagination will help you to come up with great ideas and challenges for the group. This will keep the group interesting and it will urge others to join.

Motivating people is an important quality to possess. If you do not motivate people to do things they won’t want to do anything. Motivation shows a determined leader.

Giving options instead of orders would be important during someone’s reign of leadership. Picture this; if you were to order everyone around would they want to follow you? Give them options and they will realize that although you're the leader, they are still free to make their own choices.

Pierre Elliot Trudeau lived a well-educated and long life. He was also our country’s Prime Minister twice! Pierre was born on Oct. 18, 1919 and he then died in the fall of 2000 at the age of 81. He grew up in Montreal, Quebec and he was educated privately before he graduated with a law degree from the University of Montreal.  He then went to Harvard University and left, graduating with a M.A. degree.  He also went to the University of Paris and the London school of Economics.  He was elected on April 20, 1968 and served until 1979, and again in 1980 to 1984.  Within his life he married and divorced Margaret Sinclair, now known as Margaret Trudeau Kemper.  Pierre and Margaret also had three boys, Michel, the youngest died in an avalanche in his early 20’s.  Sasha is their middle child, and Justin the oldest who now teaches privately in North Vancouver.  Pierre Elliot Trudeau earned many a person’s respect in his lifetime and is still very well respected.

You can tell that Pierre was a disciplined student of study and work.  He learned to discipline himself because he was determined to get as far as he did.  He ended up with a law degree from the University of Montreal and an M.A. degree from Harvard University.  He also went to the University of Paris and the London School of Economics.  The fact that Pierre Elliot Trudeau was so determined to do something with his life shows great discipline towards how hard he had to study and work to get as far as he did.

When Pierre became our Prime Minister twice, once from 68-79 and again in 80-84 he became part of a democracy.  He was giving the public the option of deciding on whatever changes were going to happen in the country.  In a dictatorship Pierre would have been giving orders to the public.  A good leader should always give the public options not orders so the public of followers will continue to want to follow.  We are lucky to live in a democracy instead of a dictatorship.  Our public has the option of choosing our Prime Minister and Pierre was lucky enough to be chosen twice!

For Pierre Elliot Trudeau to be chosen as our Prime Minister he needed to have ideas thoughts, ways of the future.  This means he needed to be a thinker.  The first time he was elected we may not have known he was a thinker but the second time that may have given him an advantage.

As a leader of our country Pierre needed to be able to motivate people so they would do thins needed to be done to make our country a better place.  He was able to do this well if he was chosen twice.

Pierre Elliot Trudeau was a good leader, you could tell because he was consistent and dependable.  This was known because he was always at the meetings he was supposed to be and also he was consistent with his education, never stopping and always showing up for classes.  A dependable leader deserves to be chosen twice.

Pierre was a wonderful leader.  He showed everyone determination, discipline towards education and what it takes to be a good leader.  If this assignment was given to somebody with a cold heart or even someone who has a low self esteem rate, it would show him or her that there is hope for everyone to do something with his or her life.

Alexander Mackenzie

By: Kelly Sawatsky

To be a good leader, a person has to have a number of qualities that other people admire. It takes a responsible, organized, honest, and friendly person to be chosen to be a leader. Whether you are a leader in politics, a class president, a teacher or a parent, you still have to make important decisions that people can respect. A leader needs to work hard to gain people’s trust.

A leader needs to be organized. Being organized is important because the leader can’t be late and misplace things or else everything will go wrong because he is not properly prepared.

A leader must be someone you can trust and rely on. Being trustworthy is important because if you can’t count on his trust, you wouldn’t know what to tell him and what not to tell him.

A leader needs to take responsibility. Responsibility is important because if the leader doesn’t carry out all his duties in an efficient manner, everything will not go as planned just because the leader wasn’t responsible.

A leader needs to give respect. Giving respect is necessary so people feel their ideas are important. If the leader doesn’t respect the people around him, nobody will want to be with the leader or talk to the leader.

A leader needs to be unselfish. It is important to think of other people’s thoughts and feelings because if the leader always wants his own way nobody will like the leader or listen to the leader.

A leader has to be loyal to the people around him because if the leader is not loyal to his followers will not want to follow him and work along with him.

A leader has to be able to listen to others and make them feel safe. This is important because people need to be listened to and feel no danger or threat. The people will like the leader better if the leader does this.

Alexander Mackenzie, Canada’s second prime minister, became Canada’s first Liberal prime minister in 1873. Alexander Mackenzie was born on January 28, 1822 at Logierait, Scotland and immigrated to Canada in 1842. He died on April 17, 1892 in Toronto, Ontario.  Soon after settling in Canada, Mackenzie joined the Reform Party, became interested in politics, and was soon head of the party. He formed the first Liberal party in Canada in 1873 and became the prime minister. Under his leadership, he introduced the secret ballot, founded the Royal Military Collage, created the Supreme Court, created the Office of the Auditor General and was the leader of the Opposition from 1878 to 1880. During his administration he took charge of the Department of Public Works. One of Mackenzie’s most important achievements came during the Pacific Railway dispute. Mackenzie insisted that the governor general allow Canada to handle its own internal affairs.

Alexander Mackenzie tried to guarantee honesty by putting himself in charge of the Department of Public Works. Because this department spent the most money, it had the greatest possibility for dishonesty. His parliament passed laws to prevent dishonest election practices by introducing the secret ballot.

Alexander Mackenzie took responsibility at an early age. At the age of ten he began to herd sheep to help support his family. When his father died three years later he left school to train as a stonemason. Even though he was not in school, he continued to read and give himself a good education, which included the study of literature, history, science, philosophy and politics. When he entered into political life he helped George Brown win election to the Legislative Assembly.  Mackenzie himself took charge of the Department of Public Works to guarantee honesty in his administration. Alexander Mackenzie listened to others and valued their opinions. It was unusual for a man of his humble origins to attain such a position in government. Lord Dufferin, the current Governor General, stated: “ However narrow and inexperienced Mackenzie may be, I imagine he is a thoroughly upright, well-principled, and well-meaning man”. He made people feel safe. He often needed to escape the patronage-seekers waiting for him. He always wanted to maintain party unity and ensure the loyalty of his fellow Liberals. He passed laws to allow more citizens to vote and introduced the secret ballot.

Alexander Mackenzie was an unselfish and humble man. He refused the offer of a knighthood three times. His pride in his working-class origins never left him.

Mackenzie faced many national economic problems when he was Canada’s prime minister mainly because he served during a worldwide depression. Working under these conditions, he still proved he was a good leader and he stood for many good things. His honesty, keen sense of responsibility, his unselfish manner and loyalty to others made him a good leader. He listened to others, which made his followers feel safe. He achieved success with these qualities of leadership. He demonstrated that an ordinary person can achieve great things.

I'M LEADING. IS ANYONE FOLLOWING?

CHARLES JOE CLARK

by Thomas

A leader must have some or all of these qualities:

First, s/he must tell the truth at all times so that you will not know when to trust him and when not to.  It is hard to follow a person who you think is untrustworthy.

Secondly, a leader must have a willingness to take responsibility. This means that you accept bad things as well as good things in your record because you learn and improve so that you will not make the same mistake.

Thirdly, mental toughness is what you need to be smart and work at improving your mind.  Take drawbacks as well as compliments.

Fourthly, a leader must be able to make people listen.  It is an important trait because you need to be heard and not be ignored by the citizens or people so they can suggest things that you can do to improve.

A fifth quality is that of self-discipline.  Being a disciplined student of study and work means that Joe Clark will work to succeed and study to improve so that people will care.

Another quality is the ability to encourage achievable task.  This means that you encourage the people but do not lie to them.  They will expect you to see them improve in many ways.

Sixthly, a leader must plan for success but be ready for failure.  This means you should plan and work for success but do not expect it because you might fail and you will not be ready.

Lastly, being a thinker means that you are expected to mean what you say.  So you should think about what you are about to say, before you say it.

Charles Joe CLARK was born in High River, Alberta in 1939, the son of a newspaper owner and editor.  Clark’s first taste of professional politics came in 1958.  He graduated in 1960 he traveled through Europe for a year.  In 1962 he worked for the Diefenbaker election team.  He served as president of the Progressive Conservative Student Confederation.  He also worked for Davie Fulton. In the following year,he began his M.A. (Master of Arts) in Political Science.  In 1958 he worked for Alan Lazerte who was campaigning for leadership.

Joe Clark was a disciplined student of study and work because he had been teaching in a University ever since he retired from politics. He was editing the School Newspaper and working as a sports writer for the Calgary Herald one summer.  At the University of Alberta he studied History, English and Political Science.

Joe Clark is a thinker because he has been a president of a small government and was in a political party for a long time so he knows to think before he does something.

He was planning for success when he lost his small government and seemed to be ready when he lost it.  In 1979, Joe, at the age or 39 won a small Conservative government. Unfortunately, he lost it 7 months later.

I found out that leadership is one of the most important things for politics.  It’s the kind of things that presidents, Prime Minister must have to be a successful leader.

  I’m Leading, Who’s Following?

John Joseph Caldwell Abbott

By Daniel Morris

It is good to be an able leader so you are able to do different things to help you as a leader. You can finish your work on time and make a good effort on it.

A caring leader makes the top of my list. Maybe if you're in trouble your leader will stand up for you and make you feel good.

Being friendly would rank second on my rating scale. Being friendly would be giving your worker options not orders.

Hard-working is another very important Criteria. But hard working can also act as a bad thing when the leader makes you work harder than you should.

A leader should be wise so he can make the right decisions for the group. If he does not make the right decisions the team will fall apart

Being loyal makes the top five on my list for sure. Being loyal means to respect your colleagues and not be a coward. If you are not loyal you won’t have anyone to be loyal too.

Being helpful ranks pretty high on my rating scale. Being helpful may make your workers better when you retire. They would respect you more and would not want you to quit.

Sir John Joseph Caldwell Abbott had a very busy professional life. In his early life he was a lawyer in the group (The Bar of Canada East in 1847). In 1853-1876 he was a professor at the McGill College. In 1855-1880 he was a

Dean of Law at McGill College also. Also in 1862 He was the President of the Canadian Central Railway. From 1885-1891 He was part of the board of directors. In 1891-1892 he was the Prime Minister of Canada for 18 months until he retired because of health. In 1887-1888 he was the Mayor of Montreal. He died on October 30 1893 in the Mount Royal Cemetery.

In the research I found that that he was a loyal man. Abbott was willing to take over, as Prime Minister but wanted Sir John A Macdonald’s top two men to take it over. Abbott was loyal to Macdonald by helping and not being a coward to him.

Abbott was friendly in any way possible. He was friendly to his colleagues, helpers and friends. He was very friendly when he funded the anti- cruelty to animals group. Being friendly is very important for a Prime Minister.

Abbott was an able man according to my research. Abbott did his work to the best of his abilities and never complained. He was able to take challenges head on and fight right through them. He was a very able man.

I think that Abbott was a very wise man. He was wise when he funded the anti-cruelty group. People now probably like him more. Being wise helped his group, family and friends. For if Abbott was not wise he would have had a lot of problems.

Abbott was very helpful to his colleagues and friends. He would help them through rough times. Abbott was helpful to his workers by setting a good example for them to look up to. Being helpful is one of the criteria that stands out about Abbott.

Alexander Mackenzie proved his loyalty by working hard to support his family after his father’s death. He remained loyal to his party after the conservatives return to power in 1878. Mackenzie won respect for his determination, hard work, and honesty. He retained his seat in Parliament until his death.

I'M LEADING. IS ANYONE FOLLOWING?

Sir Robert Laird Borden

  by Danny

A good leader must possess several qualities:

Not panicking in tough situations is very important because if you have to think fast, you can t waste time panicking.  You have to be able to trust your leader to lead you through tough situations.

You have to be able to encourage while you criticize.  If you say things like  “that s horrible” and then let a different person complete the task, your followers will think that you are bossy.  If you do have to criticize, then do it in a positive way.

You can’t be a coward if you expect to lead anyone or anything.  If you were scared of your own shadow, then you would have a very tough time leading a country through a war.  Don’t be scared of everything that moves but don t trust everyone that you meet either.

You have to learn how to make up your own ideas.  Making your own ideas is 10 million times better than copying someone else.  Put some variety in people s lives.

You have to be able to treat everyone fairly to be a good leader.  You can’t let or make one person do everything; you have to treat everyone equally.  Who knows, some people might be better at certain things than you thought.

You have to give options instead of orders.  If you just say things like  “I m doing this and I don t care what you think”, people are going to start to dislike you so give your followers choices.

I think that being unselfish is very important.  If you're on a tour through the desert, you can t have all the food or water and it s the same with anything else.  You have to give other people some  “food.”

The Right Honourable, Sir Robert Laird Borden, spent most of his life helping people.  He was born in 1854 in Gran Pre, Nova Scotia and died in 1937 in Ottawa, Ontario.  He went to school at Acacia Villa Academy in Horton, Nova Scotia and got married to Laura Bond in 1889.  Aside from being Prime Minister, he also had many other jobs, which were being a teacher in Nova Scotia and New Jersey, a lawyer, President of Crowns Life Insurance, Barclay s Bank and the Canadian Historical Association and finally an author.  He actually led Canada through the entire First World War. When he died, he was buried in Beechwood Cemetery, Ottawa, Ontario.

He was unselfish because he extended franchise to women (giving them the right to vote) and made many other different acts.

Robert Borden was involved in many things concerning the military and war so obviously he was anything but a coward.

He created ideas very well because he tried many, many different jobs and was involved in all the acts in Canada from 1914-1917.

Robert Borden, because of all the things he did, seemed to treat everyone fairly. 99% of the things he did had absolutely nothing to do with him.

I think that doing this project made me think about how important having a decent leader is.  Then again, nobody is perfect and everyone has his or her pros and cons.  This served me well so that now, when I get older, I will choose my Premier and Prime Minister by voting carefully.

  Sir Wilfred Laurier

      By Danna

To me, a leader should be able to give options instead of orders. Example: If a leader is in a bad situation, the leader should give his followers some choices on what to do.

Also, a leader should be very kind to his followers, or else, the followers won’t listen to his instructions. Usually when I see a leader, they are nice but some of them aren’t.

A good leader is not a coward. He should be brave not scared. He should believe in himself and his followers and not let them down.

A leader should also be able to create good ideas, especially when he is in a tough situation and doesn’t know what to do. The leader should have ideas in mind just for the occasion.

A leader should be very honest to his followers, and tell the truth at all times. He should never lie, for if he does, it will create bigger lies and in the end, it will be a big mess caused by the leader.

A leader should be willing to take a risk. Even if it’s a mountain they have to climb, he should know in his heart that they will make it across.

Last but not least, a leader should definitely listen to his followers. He should know that they have ideas too and that they might work.

Wilfred Laurier, born Nov.20 1841 was the president of Privy Council. Laurier died Feb.17 1919 and was buried in the Notre Dame Cemetery. He was so famous they named a University after him, “ Wilfred Laurier University”. One night at the University there was a street party, it was supposed to celebrate the end of exams. The year 1993 party left Exra Avenue with damages and hundreds of beer bottles smashed all over the street.

Wilfred Laurier has set goals and then tried to reach them. Here are some of his goals: to teach students the fundamentals and working of the stock market and the risks and opportunities it poses.

Wilfred Laurier and his teachers are doing a project with there students in competition. Students will complete a written evaluation at the end.

Laurier has worked very hard on creating provinces. He created the idea of putting the provinces together. It must have taken a few years for that.

He is honest because when Britain made Canada join the Boor War in Africa, he refused. He told the British what he really thought, not just what he wanted to say.

He is nice because he talks to paperboys on the street and is very nice to them and other people. He talks about the good sides of life and makes them happy if they are sad.

I really liked studying Wilfred Laurier and I found many interesting facts about him. The most important fact that I learned was that he developed the provinces. Without his creative ideas and honesty, he would not have been able to complete this task. This is what makes a good leader!

Rick Hansen

Rby Bryce

A leader is persistent.  This quality is important because success does not come easily.

A leader is strong.  This quality is important because strength is needed to complete any difficult task.

A leader is focused.  This quality is important because distractions can cause failure.

A leader is not selfish.  This quality is important because personal sacrifice is needed to benefit many people.

A leader is a team player.  This quality is important because one person cannot do everything well.

A leader is inspirational.  This quality is important because dedicated followers will also inspire their leader.

A leader is humble.  This quality is important because long-term success does not come without humility.

One of our local heroes is a man named Rick Hansen.  Rick Hansen was born in 1946 and is still living today.  When he was 15 years old he was in a car crash and was paralyzed from the waist down due to a spinal cord injury.  Even though he couldn’t use his legs, he amazingly went all around the world in a wheelchair.  He was raising money for spinal cord injury research.  He raised 24 million dollars.  The tour lasted for over 2 years and visited 34 countries.  He wheeled over 40,000 kilometers!  He married Amanda, who accompanied him on his tour as a physiotherapist.  Now they live in Richmond with their three daughters.

Rick Hansen was not afraid to accept a challenge.  He didn’t let his disability stop him from achieving his goal; to wheelchair all around the world to raise money for spinal cord injury research.

Rick Hansen was not selfish when he went on the tour around the world.  He didn’t keep the 24 million dollars that was donated to him; instead of being greedy he gave all the money to spinal cord injury research.

Rick Hansen had a vision to raise awareness of abilities of disabled people that he made into reality.  With that vision he set a goal for himself to wheelchair all around the world.  Even though it was a very difficult task he finally achieved his goal.

Rick Hansen didn’t give up during his tour.  He didn’t say, “ Oh, I can’t do this.  I quit.”  He kept on trying to achieve his goal.  Even though he was robbed nine times, he didn’t decide to stop right where he was and go back home.

Rick Hansen had a special skill; he could “wheelchair”.  He used this ability to overcome his disability and to achieve his goal.

Rick Hansen has many important accomplishments.  He was the first student with a physical disability to graduate in physical education from the University of British Columbia, he became a prominent wheelchair athlete, wheeled all over the world (over 40,000 kilometers) and raised millions of dollars for spinal cord injury research.

Leaders must be committed to what they are trying to achieve.  Leaders are one of the best things in our world because they are good role models and they help us realize things that we never even knew could affect us.  Leaders shouldn’t give up and that’s what being a leader is all about.

Seven Criteria of a Leader

by Clark

You need to take responsibility when you are a leader because you have to make many difficult decisions and you have to accept responsibility for those decisions.

You need to be loyal when you are a leader because many of the people will make mistakes.  You must respect your peers or else they won’t stick by your side anymore.

You need to not be a coward when you’ are a leader because different leaders do different things and you have to be brave to do them.  For example, some leaders must go to be conferences to speak and go on T.V.

You have to believe in yourself when you are a leader because if you don’t, things could go wrong.  When you do not believe in yourself and you are talking, you could stutter your words and sweat.  People will think you are scared and do not believe in yourself.  They won’t believe in you either.

You need to give people hope when you are a leader because you need to have them believe that things can get better.  If you don’t everything will stay the same or may even get a little worse.

You must be unselfish when you’re a leader because if you just worry about yourself all the time many things could go wrong.  That’s whey a good leader should worry about other people more than himself.

You have to be honest with other people because if you lie they will not be able to trust you at all and you would not be very popular.

Canada is lucky to have Mr. Jean Chretien as its twentieth Prime Minister. Jean Chretien was born in 1934 in Shawnigan, Quebec, and is still living.  Chretien was interested in politics since he was very young.  In 1958 he became a lawyer.  Chretien became a Member of Parliament for the Liberals in 1963.  Over the next twenty years he was very active in government.  He served as a Minister of many departments, such as Finance and Justice.

In 1984 Jean Chretien ran to be the leader of the Liberal party.  He won and then led them to a majority government.  On November 4, 1993 Jean Chretien became the 20th Prime Minister of Canada.

Jean Chretien is best known for his many years of experience in government.  There are a number of  reasons why Jean Chretien is a good leader.

He gives people hope because he believes in providing them with good health care and education. These are two things that people in the rest of the world believe make Canada a great country.

Jean Chretien takes responsibility for his actions.  If he does something wrong he will admit to it.  Jean Chretien is loyal because he has stayed with the same political party his whole life.  Even when the Liberals lost an election he still remained an active member.

Jean Chretien believes in himself a lot because even though he is getting older he keeps running for Prime Minister.  He believes that he is still able to do a great job leading the country.

Jean Chretien is not a coward.  He talks in front of large crowds of people even if some of those people are protesting against him.

To become a leader like Jean Chretien you must never give up.  You have to accept all of the losses when you are running to be Prime Minister.  Also, you should stay with the same party and keep trying because if you quit you’re a loser.  If you keep trying you may one day win.  As a result of his efforts Jean Chretien has been Prime Minister of Canada for almost eight years.

  Lester Bowles Pearson

By Kaela

I think a good leader should have respect for his followers. I believe he/she should have this quality so the followers will be strong and endure almost anything.

It is important that a leader is not afraid of conflict. If a leader is afraid of conflict, they will accept anything to avoid conflict

If a leader were not responsible, he/she would not be supported. They wouldn’t care about anything and our country would be a disaster.

A leader should be trustworthy. You don’t want them to tell your deepest secrets! You couldn’t do anything without it being told to someone.

A great leader must be dependable. If they are not dependable, you couldn’t depend on them to help you with something important.

A leader must defend their followers. They must defend their followers because if a follower gets in trouble for something they did not do they need someone to defend them and tell the truth.

A leader must stay calm in a tough situation. If a leader were to panic in an emergency, they would not be able to do anything because they would be so nervous.

Lester Bowles Pearson, our fourteenth prime minister, was a positive leader and played sports until he became amused with politics. Lester was born April 23 1897 Newton Brook, Ontario. He went to the University of Toronto. When Pearson was 28 he married Maryon Moody. From 1945-1946 he was Canadian Ambassador to the United States. He was a Professor and Chancellor at Carleton University from 1969-1972. Pearson was leader of the Liberal Party from 1958-1968. Pearson is known for a new Canadian flag, Medicare and a Canadian pension plan. Lester retired in 1968. Pearson died 1972 but his Party still goes on in the hands of Jean Chretian our current prime minister. Lester was buried in Maclaren Cemetery, Wakefield, Quebec.

I do not believe Lester Pearson was afraid of conflict because he met with the United Nations and knew there would be a disagreement or conflict about the Suez Canal Crisis.

When the Suez Canal Crisis occurred in 1956 the British and the French threatened to plunge the world into war again. This was when our prime minister, Pearson, met with the United Nation’s and suggested a peacekeeping force. This proves Lester does not panic in a tough situation but tries to solve the problem and not make it bigger.

You can see that Pearson is a dependable person because he was a part of External Affairs. So if a Canadian were in trouble outside of Canada Pearson would help them.

Lester Pearson is a trustworthy person. This is evident because he made the right decisions for our country and tried to stop war and not make it bigger.

Pearson is responsible. This is obvious because he worked for many hours and did anything was needed to be done.

Lester Pearson became our fourteenth Prime Minister.

John George Diefenbaker

                                   By Scott

A leader who doesn’t make a commitment is not a good leader. If he/she is always changing their projects they will never complete a project or take a long time to finish their goal.

My second criterion for a leader is not panicking in tough situations. Panicking in a tough situation could have disastrous results. You could have something bad happen to you or even worse your followers.

A leader who is not loyal to his/her followers is a bad leader. The result would be his/her followers branding him/her a traitor and they would probably want a different group.

My fourth criterion for a leader is a person who feels the thrill of a challenge. If he /she does not want to challenge themselves to make a better group they will not be as good of a leader as a person who does.

A leader who does not want to improve is not a very good leader. If they do not want to improve their group will never be able to achieve greater feats or challenges and they will always stay the same way.

A leader shouldn’t constantly be making wrong decisions. If they are, they will land themselves and their followers in constant trouble and their followers will most likely leave.

My seventh criterion for a leader is a person who treats everyone fairly. If a leader favours only a few in his/her group the others who are treated unfairly will not want him/her as a leader and abandon the group.

I think John George Diefenbaker was great political leader. Maybe you too will think so after reading this. John Diefenbaker was born in 1895 on the 18th of September, in Neustadt, Ontario. He went to the University of Saskatchewan and graduated with a law degree in 1919.  He married Edna Brower in 1929 she died in 1951. He remarried Olive Palmer in 1953. Diefenbaker had one stepdaughter as his child. One thing he was known for was that he was the first Prime Minister of Canada to allow other nationalities into politics and the House of Commons that were not of French or English origin. He was elected as Prime Minister of Canada in 1957; his party was the Progressive Conservatives. John Diefenbaker died on August 16th, 1979 in Ottawa, Ontario. He was buried beside The Right Honourable John G. Diefenbaker Centre at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

John Diefenbaker was committed to being a Prime Minister. After trying six times and failing every single time he still tried again and succeeded. He must have liked the saying “If at first you don’t succeed try, try, and try again” because he tried again and finally became Prime Minister.

John Diefenbaker treated all nationalities fairly. He did not exclude other nationalities that were not English or French from voting for Prime Minister of Canada. He also encouraged them go into politics and become political leaders. One of his famous quotes was “I am the first Prime Minister of this country of neither altogether English or French origin, so I determined to bring about to bring about a Canadian citizenship that knew no hyphenated consideration…. I’m very happy to be able to say that in the House of Commons today in my party we have members of Italian, Dutch, German, Scandinavian, Chinese and and Ukrainian origin-and they are all Canadians”.

Diefenbaker felt the thrill of a challenge. He was encouraged to read at a young age by his father. When he was young he read a book about Sir Wilfred Laurier and decided that he would become a Prime minister of Canada someday. And he did.

John Diefenbaker did not panic in tough situations. He heard that the Crown Assets Disposal Corporation had declared 250 Sable Island ponies surplus and there were rumors in the media that the ponies were going to be shot and turned into dog-food. He did not panic knowing that this action could destroy public relations and a part of our natural heritage because the ponies had been on Sable Island for over 200 years. After receiving hundreds of letters from school children, Diefenbaker announced in the House of Commons that the ponies would be spared and also preserved and protected for the rest of their lives.

Diefenbaker believed that there was always a better way to do something. In 1957 he created the Agricultural Rehabilitation and Development Act that helped farmers all across the country. Even after that he chose he could make another improvement and found a new market for wheat in China.

W hen doing this report I learned that we have to choose our leaders carefully or else Canada could have problems and that leadership takes a firm but fair person for success.

     Roberta Lynn Bondar

My seven criteria for leaders are: giving respect, being patient and loyal, being knowledgeable, being dependable, taking responsibility, being honest and  brave and being under control.  All of these criteria are explained  below.

My first criteria is giving respect.  That is important because if you treat others poorly, they’ll do the same to others.

Being loyal and patient is another good quality. If you’re not patient, people will not respect you.  You must be loyal so you don’t turn into a traitor. If you aren’t loyal, you are a traitor.

A leader should be knowledgeable because if you aren’t, people and yourself won’t know what to do or how to do the job.

Being dependable is a very good criterion.  If you aren’t dependable, people will think that you will be late for everything and they won’t trust you.

Being dependable is a very good criterion.  If you aren’t dependable, people will think that you will be late for everything and they won’t trust you.

Being responsible for other people is a good criterion because if someone gets hurt and you’re in charge, you are responsible for that person.

Also, you must listen to others or they won’t listen to you

You must be brave and under control.  If you aren’t, people will panic and get themselves into deeper trouble than they already are.

Roberta Lynn Bondar, too, has had an interesting life.  She was born in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.  She went to school in Sault Ste Marie and to secondary school there as well.  Roberta is a researcher and a neurologist.  She enjoys biking, hiking, flying and photography.  Roberta had photographed all of Canada’s National Parks by the millennium.  She has many medals including NASA’s space mission medal.  Roberta is also an astronaut and physician, scientist and photographer.  Her mission to space was eight days, one hour, and forty-five seconds long.  Seven Mercury astronauts inspired her.  In space, Roberta ate with spoons and scissors. In space, she traveled for 3,359, 830 miles.  Roberta landed on a concrete runway at Edwards Air Force Base in California.  Roberta is one of the six Canadian astronauts selected in December 1983 and began training in February 1984.  Roberta Lynn Bondar is lucky to be a Canadian astronaut today.

There are criteria to prove that Roberta Bondar is a leader.

I think being brave is a very good criterion for my leader, Roberta Bondar.  Roberta is brave and willing to take risks and is brave when she is flying.

Another criteria is being knowledgeable because if Roberta wasn’t, she wouldn’t know what to do or where to go and how to get there and how to control the space ship.

Roberta’s other criteria would be giving respect.  She does this by replying to children’s letters and e-mails.  She also gives respect to her fellow astronauts.

Roberta also suits being patient.  When she was training to be an astronaut, it took a long time before she was picked out of several thousand Canadian competitors.

These are the criteria, which prove that Roberta Lynn Bondar is a great Canadian leader.

Alexander Graham Bell

A person who is influential is a good leader.  If a leader wasn’t a good influence, how could s/he get us to choose the right decisions?

A good leader is beneficial to the followers.  If I could learn from a leader, I w

Someone who is trustworthy is a leader.  A great person that doesn’t lie for any reason is trustworthy.  I would follow a trustworthy person.

A person who hopes for success but is ready for failure is a good leader.  He would probably be a person who tries and tries again and never gives up.

Someone who can take a debate or protest is person who can stand up to opinions different to their own.  If they believe it is right.  That person should also listen to others.  That is a sign of a good leader.

A person with skills in things like being open minded, having an ability to set goals or having Alexander Graham Bell was the famous inventor of the telephone and the gas powered airplane.  Alexander was born in Scotland in 1847 and moved to Ontario in 1870 and moved to Ontario in 1870, and finally stayed in Boston.  In Boston he taught deaf people and married one.  He spent the summer at Baddeck in 1922 and died.  Alexander actually began to dislike the telephone, by calling it the rudest thing in history because it interrupts dinner, baths, and other important things like that.Because of Alexander many people decided to make more advanced phones like cordless and cellular.  He also influenced them to build bigger and better gas powered planes.Alexander hoped for success but was ready  for failure, that is why he was such a great inventor.  He tried and tried again until his task was complete.  It took many failures to invent the great things Alexander did.  Alexander had a great skill in Math.  Alexander was the inventor of the telephone so he needed the mathematical skills for coming up with the plans and materials for it.  Alexander was very helpful to other people.  Not only did he invent things, he actually worked with deaf people.  It was because of them that he decided to invent a communications system.  Alexander was very helpful to other people.  It was because of them that he decided to invent a communications system.  Alexander was confident he would invent something useful.  He soon did some important things like the telephone and the gas-powered airplane.

I think I chose a great leader.  Alexander was very influential, and helpful for many people.  If ever I had to choose whom I would want to follow, I would choose someone who is helpful, someone who isn’t a coward, and definitely someone like Alexander Graham Bell.
