Master's Story
Through the Eyes of its Founder, Tom Rudmik

The journey of Profound Learning over the past twenty years has been characterized by a pursuit of vision–of a big dream. During the early years of our journey, we chose the road less travelled–exploring areas such as innovation and creativity that at the time were on the fringe or non-existent for most educational initiatives. It was this exploration off the beaten path that led to some of the most important discoveries that today are at the core of our Profound Learning Model. Many reform initiatives are calling for a new system of education that prepares students to be more innovative and creative. Speakers are paid thousands of dollars to deliver this message, but few have actually created a system that can deliver these important capacities. We have created such a system and will continue to advance our Profound Learning Model.

The World of Massive Change

We are living in a world of massive change and complexity that is "calling” for a new system of education and not just a better version of the past.

 

The traditional assembly line model of education is an obsolete system and thus is no longer able to prepare students for the world of tomorrow.  To address this problem we need system transformation and not improvement.  Improved obsolescence is both a waste of resources and results in cynicism.

 

The solution to the problem of education requires a bold vision for something entirely new.

 

We at Master’s have a bold vision for something new—it’s called Profound Learning, and we have a deep sense of “calling” to develop it and share it with the world.

Our Vision to Transform Education

The mission of Master’s is to prepare students to be Future Ready. Our vision is to transform education locally and globally with Profound Learning.   At the “heart” of our mission and vision statements is academic excellence through Profound Learning, and developing students to become Master Learners and Imaginal Leaders.

 

Profound Learning unleashes academic excellence in the many, not the few. Students are more motivated to learn, and learn better, when empowered to take ownership of their learning. Along with high academic excellence, the Profound Learning model prepares students for the future with a focus on innovation and creativity.

 

 For us, who the student is becoming is as important as what he or she has academically achieved. Indeed, the two go hand-in-hand.  In our Academy, our students are becoming Master Learners, and our graduates have become Imaginal Leaders.

Master’s as an R&D School

To accomplish our vision, Master’s was established in 1997 as a research and development, K-12 Christian School.  There are many K-12 Christian Schools, but seldom if ever do they identify as R&D schools.

 

Over the years, we have attracted brilliant educators and staff members to a vision community that is fully committed to the research and development of Profound Learning.

Over the last 20 years, Master’s R&D has resulted in the development of:

Profound Learning is an empowerment model of education that facilitates students to take ownership of their learning. Its focus is on academic excellence and preparing students for the future by teaching skills in innovation and creativity.

The Profound Learning model has resulted in our Academy consistently being ranked in the top 5 of the Fraser Institute for the last number of years.

 

In the College, 90% of our graduating class advances to the post-secondary institution of their choice. And of the graduating class of 2018, 95% qualified for the Rutherford Scholarship.

Developing Tools and Systems for Transformation

Our vision for transforming education requires the development of new system structures that will generate the new behaviours and outcomes we desire.

 

The Geenius LTS is a powerful new web-based learning system that enables:

 

  • teachers to create innovative brain-based learning experiences that heighten engagement and knowledge retention
  • personalized student learning to occur
  • teachers to track the learning of each student
  • students to identify and close gaps in their learning as well as track their own development.
Teacher Professional Practices

A comprehensive teacher professional development program has been developed that will support the on-boarding of new faculty as well as ensures the long-term sustainability of Profound Learning at Master’s.

 

Needless to say, that this same training is now being used to on-board new schools around the world.

The Future Studies Program

Our exclusive Imaginal Design Program, which is similar to Future Studies program found in universities, develops our college students Imaginal abilities to see, learn from, and create the future.  It teaches weak signal research, trends analysis, scenario planning, model building, and the methods used by leading futurists.

 

By becoming Imaginal Leaders, our graduates will have a real advantage as they enter the precarious world of massive change, for not only will they have learned from the past like everyone else in school, they will have developed the ability to see, learn from, and create the future.

 

We believe that the Imaginal abilities of human beings originate in God the Creator in whose image we are created.

A Premium Placed On Environment

Profound Learning places a premium on spaces and tools that reflect intentional design, a vision of the future, and the highest state of art. In form and function, our physical learning environment must speak to the vision of Master’s to prepare students to become future ready.

 

Our physical learning environment must provide a place for students to see, learn from, and create the future. It must inspire our children to imagine, while providing tools for creating at a high state of art. The place Master’s students come to learn within must express our values. It must clearly state our vision for the future in architectural form.

MIT Fab Lab replete with tools need for fabrication of student innovation prototypes

A high school student lounge that overlooks the College gymnasium

95% of Master’s Academy Gr. 6 students achieved excellence vs the provincial average of 20%

50% of Master's College Gr. 9 and 12 students achieved excellence vs the provincial average of 20%

1999 - Promise that we will develop a breakthrough model of education called Profound Learning and we will share it with the world.

July 2012 - Our global dissemination of our model education began in Lagos Nigeria

2012- Present - Profound Learning is now being adopted by schools in Canada, Spain, Africa, and South America

2016 - launching of Imaginal Education non-profit global network

1997 Promise that we would prepare students to be future ready with the focus on innovation and creativity

2010-today - various pilot programs were launched for activating innovation and creativity with students
