PEOPLE SPEAK...
One of the ways you can help the homeless is by writing letters in defense of their needs. By doing this you can point out the injustices that you see and make suggestions for improvement. Writing a letter to the editor of a newspaper or magazine is referred to as "People Speak" because it is an opportunity for the reader to correct or comment on an article that recently appeared.
For the People Speak assignment you will read an article from the New York Times and respond to the issues written about by composing a letter to the New York Times editor. In your letter you will express your opinions and thoughts in a concise, meaningful way. Your intent will be to make people think, question the status quo and to influence the media and readers to stand up for the plight of the homeless.
Once your article has been approved by your teacher you will submit your article to the New York Times Learning Network online site for possible publication on their web site.
