On The Illusion Of Children's Rights
By David
This year, in our "SDS" (self directed studies) class we studied Children's Rights. Now Is there I would like to say that what we a hole in learned about the Child's Charter children's of Rights and Freedom are being rights and followed and observed properly, freedoms but from my own life experience ? I have found that it is not. Even within my school l have noticed great injustices and blatant disregard for the regulations of the child charter of rights and freedoms.
Dear Ngo,
The speech that I have prepared was not formulated entirely off of written
impartial facts and viewpoints. I am giving you my viewpoint because I just
happen to be a child, the kind of person that this conventions affects.
One part of the Childs Charter of Rights and Freedoms that I have chosen
to talk about is the freedom to " protest without the fear of being
punished for protesting" ( Section 2 C). I feel that this right is
constantly being abused and bent. In schools especially, this right should
be respected to its fullest. If a punishable crime has been committed at
school the child in question should have the right and even be urged to
protect and defend themselves. Without that right being used and
respected, the school in question is in a state in criminal legality.
Suggestions: This law is a key to a safe school and a comfortable learning
environment ( which are both guidelines to the Child's Rights and
freedoms law). It should be part of the routine questions to a child that
has been caught offending school policy.
Another part of the Child's Charter of Rights and Freedoms that I
would like to discus is the law stating a childs right to an " Education that
supports developing to the fullest potential". This law is currently being
infringed upon even at the school that I attend, a school that provides a
much more complete education that in many other schools. To have an
education taught to you at you at your fullest level is not an easy task. A
teacher and a school however must comply to the fullest abilities of a child
as an individual and not as a class. Each child has their own level of
knowledge and a teacher has to find where each student stands and try to
exceed that level every day.Individualized learning programs are most
essential for this law to be fulfilled and should be used especially in schools
that are known to exceed the normal teaching level.
In conclusion this speech I urge you all to travel beyond the guidelines of
today to make the world a better place.
I leave you now with a favorite quote:
"To move a rock you first have to pick up."
