INFERENCE

In order to be a forensic scientist, one must also have inferring abilities. Following observation and the gathering of clues, the forensic scientist may make inferences.  To infer means to make interpretations based on the observations. Words that we can use to describe inference are: deduce; anticipate; predict what if; infer; apply; speculate; and conclude. For example, the suspect of the crime was wearing dark clothing to camouflage. Once again, a forensic scientist needs to apply the inference skills to recognize patterns as they continue to collect the data.

When a crime scene is investigated by police, all clues are examined.  These clues might include tire prints shoe prints or footprints.
