Alberta Teachers Union Strike

Strike updates

Tuesday, October 28, 2025

Dear Parents,

Today, the Government of Alberta introduced legislation, known as the Back to School Act (Bill 2), that will order teachers back to work.

We recognize that the current labour action has created uncertainty and challenges for families, students, and staff.  We look forward to welcoming students back into classrooms as soon as possible to continue the school year.

Like other Alberta school boards, Palliser School Division is considering potential adjustments to school calendars, such as converting upcoming professional development days into instructional days, to help maximize classroom learning time.

We understand that the ongoing teacher job action has raised questions about the status of the Fall Break scheduled from Monday, November 10th, to Friday, November 14th.

We would like to let you know that Fall Break is NOT cancelled and will proceed as scheduled.

We thank you for your patience and understanding.   We will continue to provide updates regarding school opening as soon as they are available.

Sincerely,

Master’s Academy and College

As of October 22 2025, the Alberta teachers’ strike remains ongoing, with all K–12 classes across Calgary and the rest of Alberta still suspended. The Alberta Teachers’ Association has rejected the government’s latest proposal for “enhanced mediation,” citing ongoing concerns over classroom conditions and class sizes. The provincial government has responded by making November’s diploma exams optional for high-school students affected by the disruption. Both the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District remain under active labour action, with no confirmed timeline for a return to classrooms.

As of October 17, 2025, the Alberta teachers’ strike remains ongoing. All K-12 classes across Calgary, including within the CBE and CCSD, are still cancelled under the province-wide work stoppage and lockout that began earlier this month. Negotiations between the Alberta Teachers’ Association and the provincial government have stalled, with no confirmed timeline for resolution. Parents can still apply for the province’s $30-per-day support program for children aged 12 and under. Both school boards continue to post updates on their official labour-action pages as the situation develops.

All K–12 classes across Alberta, including those within the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) and Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD), remain cancelled until further notice as the province-wide teachers’ strike continues.

Formal negotiations between the Alberta Teachers’ Association and the provincial bargaining team are scheduled to resume next Tuesday, following the Thanksgiving long weekend. Both sides have confirmed that discussions are ongoing.

The Government of Alberta’s lockout notice, issued earlier this week, remains in effect. The province has also provided an online “learning toolkit” and temporary financial supports for families affected by school closures.
