Manzanar Internment Camp- Dorothea Lange, July 3, 1942

"The dread of something terrible that might happen to us all should never instigate or be the excuse for something very terrible being done to one of us now. "     ~ Rex Murphy      (for the CBC National)

Internment... a blemish on our nations' history, a time when we sidestepped basic human rights in the name of national defense. It's happened before in our country's history- during 1914-1918, 1939-1945, and now during post 9/11.

In order to break the cycle of internment we need to look backwards to times when internment seemed like the best way to protect a country at war. What did we learn from history? What causes us to default to acts of internment?

And most importantly, what can we learn from the past and the present so that we don't automatically default to what has been done before. Is there a better way?  Let's find out...
